## Hand-written WebAssembly, 5–60× faster than JavaScript: how, and the idea that beat it

We gave five jobs from our app a second, deliberate pass in hand-written WebAssembly: the password check, opening encrypted notes, typo-tolerant search, textures and a frosted-glass blur. Against JavaScript doing the same work they came out 5 to 60 times faster, and ahead of Rust too. An independent review caught a bug our 54,132 tests missed, and in search a better idea beat every language.

## JavaScript, Rust or hand-written WebAssembly?

We took fifteen real jobs from Memento, wrote each one in every world where it made sense, and timed them in the engines behind Chrome and Safari, warm and cold. WebAssembly won where the work was numbers in a tight loop. Elsewhere, better JavaScript usually won first.
